Recommended best practices

  • Make sure that you have a strong Internet connection.
  • If possible, use a tripod and microphone. This will help make sure that your broadcast has good-quality audio and video.
  • Prep your content to educate and inspire. Tell the story of your organisation and why this cause matters.
  • Reveal a special experience. Go behind the scenes at your organisation or an event, create a carousel of special guests, encourage viewers who stay tuned or reveal something new to your audience.
  • Tap in to influencers. If it’s not possible to have an influencer or public figure on camera, then see if they will join the chat to encourage people.
  • Share and schedule your live video. Ask others to share your live video to help you drum up momentum, and make sure that you build up your video before release to increase awareness and potential viewers. All verified Pages on Facebook can activate a Scheduled Live. Activating a Scheduled Live on Facebook notifies your audience that the verified Page plans to go live on Facebook on a certain date, allowing supporters to subscribe to receive a notification on their Facebook app when the organisation actually goes live. Activating a Scheduled Live prior to your live with donate post can help you build anticipation for your live video, and supporters can start donating even before the live video begins.
  • Interact with your audience. Encourage people to contribute, comment and share your live video. Involve viewers by thanking them, and acknowledge them by name.
  • Go live for a while. The longer you’re live, the higher the potential engagement and opportunity for donations. A live video can last for up to eight hours.
  • Offer a match. Announce to your supporters when you reach a funding goal, ask them to vote with their money and encourage matching opportunities.
  • Highlight the location of the donate button. This is a new experience for the viewer, and it’s important to explicitly highlight the location of the donate button during the live video, so they don’t miss it. For example, “You can support by clicking the Donate button in the right-hand corner in this Live video!”
  • Maximise online and offline activations. Involve a virtual community of donors with in-person events. If you are broadcasting live on Facebook at an event that’s accessible to your supporters, encourage them to come along in person and bring their friends.
  • Present a strong call to action. Giving people a milestone to work towards can help rally the crowd behind a common monetary goal.
  • Report impact. Close the loop and continue to engage your fans online, so the excitement from your fundraising event stays with people and continues to keep them engaged. Report and celebrate the impact that their donations had on advancing your charity’s mission.
  • Say thanks. Thank the supporters who viewed your live video and donated, and share next steps.
  • Share your live on other channels.
  • Take advantage of people’s interest in moment-centric content. What value does your organisation have to bring to an audience at the moment?
  • Show people behind the scenes of your programmes to see the impact of your programmes in real time.
  • Get a staff member to report on the progress of your work and field questions.
  • Amplify the reach of in-person events by broadcasting the event to your Page followers.
  • Get supporters to add a donate button or fundraiser to their live videos to raise money for your charity through their broadcast.
  • Get celebrities or influential people in your community to go live on your behalf to reach new audiences.
